DRAINAGE TRANSFORMS NEWCASTLE GRAMMAR SCHOOL RUGBY PITCH IN PREPARATION FOR THE RUGBY WORLD CUP 2015

   12-Sep-2013

Team managers from across the world are looking for training grounds to prepare for the Rugby World Cup in 2015. Newcastle Royal Grammar School has been highlighted as a potential site and is looking to perfect its pitches in time for the event and called in Duncan Ross Contractors, based near Ormskirk, Lancashire, to install additional drainage lines in the outfield areas of 26,000 sq. metre of rugby pitches.

Although owned by the RGS many of their sports facilities are also used by the local county clubs, such as the historic Jesmond Cricket ground which is home to Newcastle cricket club and Northumberland county cricket club.

There are some 1270 children at the school using the sports fields for 2 hour training sessions every day of the year.

Head groundsman in charge of covering an area of 60 acres of sports pitches and a further 15 acres of grassland and landscaping and responsible for ensuring the pitches are up to scratch, is Dave Payne. He operates with only two assistants; Andy Mackay and Michael Lloyd, both experienced groundsmen.

2015 may be some way off but Dave was concerned that the forth coming rugby inspections would be badly affected if the weather turns bad again this winter. “Although main drainage was installed a number of years ago across this particular pitch, it does have run at a slight gradient towards the extreme edges.”

“We had so much rain earlier in the year the outfields were constantly under water and starting to encroach into the area marked out for play. We had to bring in the ‘deadball’ line another 5 yards.”

“This may not have been a huge job,” explained Duncan Ross managing director of Duncan Ross Contractors. “But it is a classic example of where the effectiveness of the original drainage installation could be improved enormously with a few carefully positioned lateral drains.”

“We initially had to locate the existing drainage scheme before planning where to install laterals to connect up to the main system. By adding 80mm diameter lateral drains at 3meter spacings and creating purpose made junctions to join the laterals to the main drain system we could re-direct the flow of water back to the main drains.”

It was then a case of trenching, inserting the pipes, backfilling with 8mm stone to within 150mm of the surface and topping with rootzone for seeding.”

Dave is delighted with the work done by Duncan and his team. “They have been extremely efficient and have understood exactly what the problem was and how to fix it,” he continued “There was very little disruption and with the good weather for a change, were able to complete the job and re-instate the site within a few days.”

The result is a field with a consistent level of drainage across the entire length and width of the playing fields without any noticeable areas of pooling - perfect for the high standards of play offered by one of the most prestigious sporting grammar schools in the country.
