WHAM FARM FINDS A SOLUTION TO FARM FLOOD THREAT

   11-Feb-2014

Duncan Ross, drainage contractor, has installed a reversible pumping station at Whams Farm in Lancashire. The objective is to prevent extensive flood damage occurring again this winter, by managing the water levels on the farm.

Neil and wife Vicky Webster farm own their own 200 acre farm and are tenants on a further 900 acres in Martin Mere, Scarisbrick, Lancashire. They made headline news in December 2012 when BBC North West visited the devastation caused by flooding on both farms. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01356rj.

A consequence of the land being very flat and about mean sea level, adequate drainage had never been possible and the existing land drainage, constructed on the basis of traditional gravity drainage methods, was proving ineffective. The excessive rainfall of the previous winters has had a massive effect on crop yields and caused huge losses to the farmer.

Not one to give up without a fight, Neil turned his mind to finding a solution.  He had worked with Duncan Ross before on general drainage and called him in to look at a more drastic approach.  Duncan explained how it was not about the amount of water on the farms but about managing it successfully. “In order to reduce water levels the introduction of pumps was inevitable.  However, we wanted to keep the implementation costs and future operating and maintenance costs within acceptable limits.”

After consultation and with the full co-operation with his neighbour, the pump and infrastructure supporting it would be installed as a joint venture to control the water levels on Neil’s farm and his neighbours 200 acres of land too.

Duncan Ross has worked on several similar schemes, each requiring an individual approach but looking to achieve the same result – alleviating flooding and combatting drought.

To achieve this Duncan first had to accurately calculate how much water the existing ditches could cope with compared to the expected maximum levels of rainfall over a given acreage.  This figure was very important as it determined the size and capacity of the pump needed.

Duncan Ross said “We are not just about contracting and installing pipes. We have a vast resource of technical knowledge and experience and we know how to use it. Sometimes the solution to a problem can seem daunting, but as with Neil, we can help you find the right way forward.”

Following careful assessment of various configurations of vertical and horizontal drainage technologies, the chosen solution involved:

•        Construction of 1.8m diameter concrete pumping chamber  with 600mm diameter inlet pipes and housing  two 150mm diameter 6.5kW submersible pumps, each pump having a duty of 75 litres per second and 5.0m static head.

•        Construction of a sheet piled dam and headwalls.

•        Renovation, over-excavating and enlargement of the existing network of open drainage ditches to both farms.

•        Replacement of all existing land drainage infrastructure at both farms.  All new drainage was installed at a new optimum depth; in total over 40,000m of lateral and carrier drains were replaced.

Neil is delighted with the results. He feels confident that if this winter brings the same weather patterns and rainfall as the previous couple of years, he will be more than prepared to deal with it. “The best part of the project is that the pump is reversible,” says Neil “In the event that we have a drought next year, any water held in the dam will be used for irrigation. It is a win-win situation.”
